If you’re looking for the best hostels in Hiroshima, this guide has you covered.
Hiroshima comes from the Japanese word âHiroâ or âwideâ and âShimaâ or âisland.â This name comes from the fact that the city is located on the Ota river, whose channel divides it into several different islets or âwide islands.â
But youâre not here for a Japanese geographical lesson; youâre here for a recommendation for the best hostels in Hiroshima.
Hiroshima doesnât have an extensive list of options. Still, the Hiroshima Hostels weâve selected are suitable for all types of travelers, whether youâre looking for a warm and cozy space to socialize in, a place to âwork from home’, or a clean and safe dorm that wonât damage your wallet.
Regardless of your intention to look for hostels in Hiroshima, these are excellent places to call home.

Quick Introduction to Hiroshima
Average price for a bed: Hostels in Hiroshima cost $18 – $25 per night for a bed in a dorm. A private room has an average of around $85 per night. This is a rough average, just to give you an idea.
Prices always depend on the season and holidays. Please always check the exact rates on Hostelz.com or Hostelworld.com.
Check-In and Check-Out: The average check-in time is from 15:00 (3 pm), while the Check-Out time is before 11:00 (11 am). Hostels usually offer luggage storage in case you arrive earlier or leave later. Make sure you check if luggage storage is free or if there is an extra cost.
Budget tip: One of your biggest expenses in Japan could be how much you spend on food. A good way to avoid this is to get bento boxes or ingredients from supermarkets and convenience stores after 8 pm.
Items are usually marked 10-20% off after that time as they are no longer considered ‘fresh’ by Japanese standards. This price markdown can go to 80% off if you approach the market’s closing time as well.
Also, this doesn’t translate into poorer taste or food quality, as Japan has a higher standard of freshness and ingredients than most countries.
How to get around: Hiroshima has a well-connected system of buses and subways, but we think the best way is to rent a bicycle (as long as it’s not extremely hot). The city is mostly flat, and you have the option to rent bikes for the hour or for the day. Some of the Hiroshima hostels on our list also include bicycle rental services.
Keep in mind that people here drive on the left!
Must-try food in Hiroshima: You’re probably aware that Osaka is the go-to place for Okonomiyaki (savory crepe/pancake?), but Hiroshima has its own dish style. Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki has a thinner dough ball, and filling options include yakisoba (fried noodles).
In comparison, Osaka okonomiyaki is a pancake-style batter with fillings usually centered around seafood, meat, and Japanese yam.

1. J-Hoppers Hiroshima Guesthouse
J-Hoppers Hiroshima Guesthouse is a capsule-style hostel in Hiroshima that is perfect if youâre looking for comfortable privacy while still having the option to socialize easily.
This guest house Hiroshima hostel has the following facilities:
- A shared kitchen (with free coffee/tea)
- A roof terrace
- A lounge

Here, you can rent a bed/capsule in the dormitories or a private Japanese room with a tatami floor.
We particularly like the common area, as it’s furnished with a lot of different games and books that serve as great conversation starters and activities to partake in for fellow travelers.
Note that this is not a party hostel, and a strict ‘quiet time’ is implemented after 10 pm, so if you like sleeping in quiet spaces, you’re welcome.
As with other Hiroshima hostels on this list, they have a bicycle rental service, which is very affordable.
Location: A 10-minute walk from the Atomic Bomb Dome and a 3-minute walk from the Dobashi Tram Station. Thereâs a 24-hour supermarket nearby, as well as a few restaurant choices. This hostel is a short walk away from a lot of what the best of Hiroshima has to offer.

2. WeBase Hiroshima
WeBase Hiroshima is our top pick for digital nomads looking for a hostel in Hiroshima.
If youâve never been to Japan, you might be under the perception that the country has amazing internet access everywhere and is at the forefront of technology.
Well, this isnât actually true. Technology in Japan is mixed: youâre as likely to find a robot that will talk to you in a sightseeing spot as you are to find a fax machine spitting out its (hopefully) last breath.
All this to say that itâs the same case for Wi-Fi, whose speed can be hit or miss. Thankfully, this hostel has great Wi-Fi.
Apart from a reliable internet speed, youâll find:
- A shared lounge (with tables for laptops)
- A shared kitchen
- 24/7 reception
- Spacious rooms (relative to Japan)
- They have a breakfast buffet at a reasonable price with an okay variety.
Check prices at:
Hostelworld | Booking.com | Hostelz.com
The communal area on their base floor also has tables that are parallel to their windows – we found this a great way to work, as youâll be able to people-watch when your brain juice runs out.
WeBase Hiroshima is also part of a series of WeBase Hostel located a bit all over Japan, so their staff is experienced and very accommodating.
Location: A 12-minute walk from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. There is a popular area full of bars, pubs, restaurants, and cafĂŠs in Nagarekawacho, which is a 6-minute walk from this hostel.
Nearby popular points of interest include the Hiroshima City Minami Ward Community Cultural Center, Myoei-ji Temple, and Chosho-in Temple.
A great choice for
- Digital Nomads

3. Hostel Mallika
Hostel Mallika is a capsule-style hostel in downtown Hiroshima that is perfect for backpackers.
In this hostel, youâll find:
- A shared kitchen (very well-equipped)
- A shared lounge
- Beds with reading light/mini table/ventilator/power sockets/privacy curtains
Check prices at:
Hostelworld | Booking.com | Hostelz.com
You’ll be happy to note that they have complimentary slippers and toiletries and that they also have a basic breakfast consisting of toast, butter, jam, and coffee or tea.
The best part of this hostel is its lounge, which has a games console and a TV and serves as a dining area. It’s perfect for travelers to meet and socialize in, and it facilitates socializing.
One thing we didn’t like, though, is that their showers might be on a different floor than the room you stay in and are only accessible through an external staircase. It’s not very inconvenient, but it can be uncomfortable in winter.
Location: Hostel in the Hiroshima city centre, a short walk away from the Atomic Bomb Dome and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.
There are a couple of restaurant options nearby, and if youâre looking for bagels (yes, weâre aware bagels arenât a Japanese delicacy but trust us here), make sure to check out the Wildman Bagel store.

Best Hostels in Hiroshima for Solo Travelers?
The best hostel in Hiroshima for solo travelers is Hostel Mallika. We think it provides a great and safe space for travelers to meet and socialize in. The area is also a great starting point to explore the rest of Hiroshima.
More Hostels worth a mention
We hope that you donât mind if we keep going a little further. There are so many nice Japanese hostels in Hiroshima to experience, after all.
That being said, here is one more Hiroshima hostel we think is worth mentioning if you’re looking for very budget-friendly accommodation in Hiroshima:
Hiroshima Saijo Youth Hostel
Hiroshima Saijo Youth Hostel is another choice that we like for groups traveling together in Hiroshima who are looking for a budget-friendly accomodation.
Here, youâll find:
- A shared kitchen
- Coin launderette
- A vending machine
- A small shared lounge
We really like their dorms as, although they are a bit outdated, each bed comes with a lamp and an electric outlet and rooms are equipped with bathroom facilities.
If youâre traveling for budget-friendly accommodation for your family or friends in Hiroshima, we recommend checking out their quadruple rooms with private bathrooms, as they come loft-style with minimalist interiors.
One thing to keep in mind is that the stairs are very steep throughout the property, so pick something else if you have knee issues.
Like most hostels in Hiroshima, this one also has a bicycle rental service available!
Location: A 1-minute walk from the JR Saijo Train Station. This one isn’t in Hiroshima; it’s in nearby Higashihiroshima. The hostel is surrounded by sake breweries, restaurants, several supermarkets, and convenience stores.
Nearby points of interest include the Higashi-Hiroshima City Museum of Art, the Suwa Shrine, and a couple of popular streets like Saijo Sakagura-dori Street.

What about the cheapest hostels in Hiroshima?
Of course, there are always cheap hostels. But how do you actually find them? When you are traveling on a shoe-string budget and you want to save every dollar, there are ways to find the cheapest places in Hiroshima.
- Open Hostelz.com with a full list of all hostels in Hiroshima
- add your dates
- Order the listings by price
Simple as that.
Hostelz.com is a price comparison site for hostels. They list every single one in the world and tells you exactly which website is cheaper to use.
Another smart Tip: Check what is actually included, and what is excluded. Take a closer look at the location, too. A further location might mean more costs in transport.
