The Iguazú Falls straddle the Argentina-Brazil border, so first, you have to choose whether to stay on the Argentinean side in Puerto Iguazú or on the Brazilian side in the city of Foz do Iguaçu or in proximity to the national park.
Most visitors decide to stay in Argentina. Backpacking in Puerto Iguazú comes with a lot of unique perks. In and around this small, vibrant town full of tourists, bars, and hostels, there are plenty of attractions waiting for you.
Foz do Iguaçu is a larger city, a bit more expensive, that may not feel as relaxing, but it does have more nightlife. Visitors can always hop over the border to visit the city at night.

Quick Introduction to Iguazu
Average price for a bed: Hostels in Iguazu cost $11 – $17 per night for a bed in a dorm. A private room has an average of around $53 per night. This is a rough average, just to give you an idea.
Prices always depend on the season and holidays. Please always check the exact rates on Hostelz.com or Hostelworld.com.
Check-In and Check-Out: The average check-in time is from 15:00 (3 pm), while the Check-Out time is before 11:00 (11 am). Hostels usually offer luggage storage in case you arrive earlier or leave later. Make sure you check if luggage storage is free or if there is an extra cost.
Safety in Iguazú: Puerto Iguazú was officially granted a “Safe Travels” stamp, certifying all international standards apply to make it a safe tourist destination.
However, that doesn’t mean Puerto Iguazú is 100% free of all crimes. As everywhere else, you should stay vigilant about minimizing your chances of getting into trouble.
Safety tip: To avoid being seen with money, conceal it in a body pouch beneath your clothes and only keep small change in your pockets.
Also, wearing jewelry, expensive clothes, or any other signs of wealth is probably not a good idea.
Health tip: Avoid tap water and opt for bottled water instead. Often, it is recommended to drink carbonated water (agua con gas), which is less likely to harbor bacteria, instead of flat bottled water (agua sin gas).
You can also boil water before drinking or brushing your teeth if you have access to a kettle or stove.
Argentinian vs. Brazilian side: Which side is more worth seeing? Unfortunately, there is no clear answer to this question.
Both the Brazilian side (although much smaller) and the Argentinian side will leave you with unforgettable memories. For a complete experience, it is worth spending more than one day visiting this natural wonder and allowing yourself to see the waterfalls on both sides.

A Few Recommendations for things to do in Iguazu
Iguazu is located 17 kilometers from the Iguazú Waterfalls.
Named the ‘Great Water’ by the indigenous inhabitants of this area, with more than 275 falls, these waterfalls are one of the most majestic in South America.
The most scenic cascade is the curved cataract christened the ‘devil’s throat’ with 14 falls that drop to 350 feet (No wonder they are considered one of the seven new wonders of nature).
The Argentinian side covers about 80% of the waterfall complex.
The price of the ticket includes a train ride through the jungle to the Devil’s Throat waterfall, admission to some trails, as well as a transfer to San Martín island.
It’s best to go there in the morning, as the high water level may prevent visiting in the evening. Both sides – Argentinian and Brazilian – allow you to take advantage of additional attractions, such as:
- The Jungle safari, which is a 20-kilometer route within the Iguazú National Park, during which you can admire the fauna and flora of the region;
- Water rides on various types of water vehicles, including a raft (or so-called ecological rafting) – during these activities, you can swim directly into the waterfalls.
- Hito Tres Fronteras is the tri-point at which the three countries of Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay meet at a single point on the river. Definitely worth seeing at sunset time!
If you want to spend more time around the national park, check out Wanda mines, aboriginal villages, and the orchid park.

Another smart Tip: Check what is actually included, and what is excluded. Take a closer look at the location, too. A further location might mean more costs in transport.
