Quick Introduction to La Paz

Average price for a bed: Hostels in La Paz cost 6€ – 9€ per night for a bed in a dorm. A private room starts from 11€ up to 35€ per night. This is a rough average just to give you an idea.

Prices always depend on the season and holidays. Please always check the exact rates on Hostelworld.com or Booking.com.

Check-In and Check-Out: The average check-in time is from 15:00 (3pm), while the Check Out time is before 11:00 (11am). Hostels usually offer luggage storage in case you arrive earlier or leave later. Make sure you check if luggage storage is free or if there is an extra cost.

Transportation: The primary way people get around in La Paz is via buses, radio taxis, independent taxis, trufis, and the cable car system.

Radio taxis can be distinguished by the lighted sign on their roofs and by the fact that drivers will have a radio inside their cars to contact their dispatcher to whom they report.

They are safe to use; just make sure to negotiate the price before you go in. Independent taxis are driven by independent drivers, making them less safe and less expensive than their counterparts, especially for foreigners.

Trufis are the equivalent of ‘shared taxis,’ and they usually run on a set route throughout the day. You can identify them by the signs of the names of neighborhoods on their window, and you can go out and in at any point on their route.

The coolest way to get around La Paz is via the cable car system, which has various lines throughout the city.

Safety: This is definitely not one of the safest cities you will visit. As such, while we won’t deter you from visiting, we recommend taking as many precautions as possible. This means not going out alone during the night, not using taxis alone during the night, and not visiting neighborhoods you haven’t researched.

Be wary of motochorros as well. These are pickpocketers on wheels that will drive by on a motorcycle and snatch your phone or bag from you.

Prices: If you look and act like a foreigner, or if you simply don’t speak Spanish (or speak with an accent), you are very likely to get a price increase on anything you want to buy that doesn’t have a price tag.

Ask your hostel receptionist what a normal price range should be for specific objects, and expect that you can usually negotiate up to 50% of the price down for most items.

1. Arthy’s Guesthouse

Our #1 hostel in La Paz is spread over two and a half flights of stairs located on one of the busiest streets in the city.

Arthy’s Guesthouse has been set up to accommodate landscape and culture avid backpackers.

Though central, it is set within a quiet oasis, sheltered from the sound of honking cars and barking dogs.

It’s a cosy atmosphere, great for really getting to know others staying in the hostel.

So this really is the best choice if you’re looking for some peace and quiet just minutes from the daily life of the city.

Important: There is a midnight curfew here to support a good night’s rest. Doors re-open at 6am. Exception is made for those with flights between these hours.

When you fancy some indoor time head to the spacious lounge and indoor patio area.

This is where you can enjoy

  • Free Wifi

There is also a handy kitchen for preparing your own meals. It also happens to be open 24/7 in case you get the midnight munchies!

The room choices consist of singles, twins and quadruples. And guess what? No bunk beds in sight!

Just ask the friendly staff if you’d like a hot water bottle at night.

There is no curfew here, and reception is open 24 hours a day.

As this is a brand new hostel, you can expect brand new facilities. Important things like lockers and decorations are still being added.

What about cheapest hostels in La Paz?

Of course, there are always cheap hostels.

We think, it’s not worth it to go with the cheapest hostel out there.

Why?

The difference is usually 1-2€ ($1-2) per night, and a lot of amenities are not included. This can be breakfast or linen.

However, if you are traveling on a shoe-string budget and you wanna save every penny, there are ways to find the cheapest places in La Paz.

Best Hostels in La Paz for Solo Travellers?

What is seriously the best hostel in La Paz for solo-travellers?

Nowadays most hostels are perfectly set up for solo travellers, it just depends on what you’re after.

In the case of La Paz, we have to go with two options:

Arthy’s Guesthouse is an ideal choice for adults and older travellers. That’s because the pace is slower here, with lovely private rooms and a close proximity to the city’s sights.

Otherwise, younger and super social solo travellers can opt for Selina La Paz. They offer fun activities, a bar serving up cocktails, and a range of shared room sizes.
