Five Fun Things to Do in Tarifa

Now that you know where to get a good night’s sleep. Next is planning how you will spend your days in Tarifa. The southerly city in the Iberian Peninsula is the hub for all wind-related activities.

And when Poniente and Levenate winds come to town, the beaches swam with kites. However, there is a lot more to Tarifa than kites.

The maritime culture is just as endearing, with many water sports and incredible mountain backdrops begging to be biked or hiked. Tarifa has plenty to offer for all travelers. Here are the five fun things to do in Tarifa.

Learn how to kite-surf

When summer strolls in, so do the smooth winds, and that’s when kites color the skies in Tarifa. It can be such an overwhelming spectacle that you will feel the urge to join.

Luckily, many service providers are eager to help you on the learning curve. And there are stretches of miles from Playa de los Lances to Playa Valdevaqueros past the bay of Punta Paloma to take up this newfound hobby.

Kite surfing can be challenging, but with the right attitude and relentless effort, you should be able to solo surf on the water within a week.

Go whale and dolphin watching

Whale and dolphin watching is another activity to add to your bucket list for your trip to Tarifa. If you visit between April and October, take a boat ride to the Strait of Gibraltar to glimpse pilot, fin, orca and sperm whales and dolphins.

Orca whales are the main draw as they follow migrating bluefin tuna. And watching the whales work in unison to catch the tuna is an experience that will live long after you leave Tarifa.

Hike along Parque Natural del Estrecho

There are myriad hiking options along the mountains north of Tarifa within the Parque Natural del Estrecho to cater to avid outdoor enthusiasts.

Whereas many aren’t earmarked officially, finding a possible hiking route is ever so easy with the help of apps like View Ranger.

One of the most breathtaking is the route past hundreds of wind turbines to the pristine La Pena.

Then, head further across the ridge to El Bujeo for unobstructed views of the Straits of Gibraltar and Jebel Musa in Morocco.

Go rock climbing

Suppose you want to catch up on a hobby or try something new. Your best luck is the San Bartolo range in a tiny village in Betis.

With over 280 routes and breathtaking views of the Atlantic, Punta Paloma beach and Riff Mountains in North Africa.

The routes range between 8-90m and are all on hard sandstone and well bolted. While here, you can master the discipline of climbing small rock formations without ropes and harnesses.

Eat local delicacies

Tasting local delicacies is part of a seamless travel experience for many travelers. The charming Old Town in Tarifa is a fabulous destination to enjoy tasty treats such as Desayuno (breakfast made from tostada and chocolate y churros), Mexican-style egg dishes, and Spanish Jamon.

For lunch, grab some tapas or seafood like red tuna. The red tuna is caught off the coast by a fishing fleet and served to you the same day.

The delicacies can be found in many restaurants, but we recommend Silos 19, Bar El Frances and Braseria Vaca Loca as the best dining options.

What about the cheapest hostels in Tarifa ?

Of course, there are always cheap hostels. But how do you actually find them? When you are traveling on a shoe-string budget and you want to save every dollar, there are ways to find the cheapest places in Tarifa .

  1. Open Hostelz.com with a full list of all hostels in Tarifa
  2. add your dates
  3. Order the listings by price

Simple as that.

Another smart Tip: Check what is actually included, and what is excluded. Take a closer look at the location, too. A further location might mean more costs in transport.
