Quick Introduction to Hostels in Vietnam
You won’t find hostels in all places in Vietnam. You will find quality hostels only in cities and most-visited places.
Nevertheless, you will also find accommodations who call themselves hostels, even if they do not offer dorms or communal areas.
Names of Accommodations: In Vietnam they use the names they hear from western travelers for everything. Don’t be surprised if you find a restaurant called hostel, or a hotel called Google (we saw it!) . The best hotel/ hostel names we saw include “Trump Hostel”, “Google Hostel”, “iCloud Hotel and “Apple Hotel”.
It might feel overwhelming to decide where to stay in Vietnam.
Worry not, we are here to make it really easy for you.
Before we start with the best places to stay in Vietnam, let us give you some general and useful information:
Average price for a bed: A bed in a dorm can be as cheap as 4€ up to 15€ per night. A private room starts from 10€ up to 20€ per night. This is a rough average, but you see hostel prices in Vietnam are cheap.
Bear in mind, a hostel can be more expensive than a double room in a Homestay.
Nevertheless, it will be worth to pay a bit more, since you can upgrade to a gorgeous boutique hostel or a hostel with a roof top terrace or even a pool.
Prices always depend on season and holidays. Always check exact rates on Hostelz.com, Hostelworld.com or Booking.com.
Bargaining: In Vietnam it is very normal that accommodations raise their prices if you try to book them directly. We booked many places online directly at their reception counter to get the best price. It sounds quite odd…but well, it happened more than a few times!
Tipping: Tipping is not a thing in Vietnam or in Asia. Please respect local culture and do not throw your money around like a rich guy with no limits. However, that being said, you can show your appreciation always by tipping when someone really treated you well.
Party Hostels: There is a wide range of hostel types. You will find CRAZY party hostels, beautiful boutique hostels and really crap places to stay. Make sure you pick the right type of hostel! In this list we will mark the type of hostels too. Check here all our party hostel guides.
Cheapest Hostels: Again, we only recommend places we would share with our family too. You will not find any bs place here. That being said, if you want to hunt down an accommodation on your own, NEVER go with the cheapest hostel or home stay out there.
Always pay 1€ or 2€ more.
Why?
Every single time we took the cheapest place, the price included cockroaches, dirty towels, and an itchy unpleasant experience. Accommodation is so cheap here, you do not need to go for the shi**y 7€ double room when you can have a kick-ass place for 10€ per night.
Room Type Double Bed: The dorm-types are pretty standard. You will find anything from 4-bed dorm to 20-bed dorms. The room type “double bed” is quite funny here. It means: two double beds. so you can book actually with a buddy a double room, and you’ll get two separated queen beds.
(This is the regular case here, always makes sure you book the right room type!)
Safety: Never leave your belongings laying around, especially your wallet. There are stories of a few thousand dong being taken from a wallet. This rule applies to all hostels in the world.
Check-In and Check Out: The average check-in time is from 15:00 (3pm), while the Check Out time is before 11:00 (11am). Hostels usually offer luggage storage in case you arrive earlier or leave later. Make sure you check if luggage storage is free or if there is an extra cost.
Travel Insurance: Before heading to Vietnam, we recommend getting insurance. Find our insurance guide here. This is especially worth it if you plan to motorbike the country.

Best Hostels in Ho Chi Minh City (former Saigon)
Let us kick off this list with an epic hostel. Just so you know we are serious when it comes to the most amazing hostels in Vietnam. These are hostels in Vietnams 2nd biggest city are:
- Meander Saigon – best for Female Solo Travelers
- The Like Hostel & Cafe – best for Solo Travelers & Backpackers
- The Hideout Hostel Saigon – best for Party Lovers
We wrote a big, detailed guide to best hostels in Ho Chi Minh City. Check it for many more details, and if you’re more into parties, check this one out: best party hostels in Saigon.
Ho Chi Minh City; a city with more than 10 million motor bikes and the vibrant economic driver of the country. In all the chaos and the size it comes with, Meander Hostel is your small oasis.
Our #1 choice is the beautiful meander Hostel. It is the absolute ebst hostel in HCMC for female solo travelers and digital nomads.
What about the Location?
Saigon hostels in district 1, very close to Japan Town. Restaurants, cafés, and bars surround the area. Many of Saigon’s main sights and attractions are at a walkable distance from this hostel. Alternatively, you’ll find a bus stop right in front of its entrance.

Best Hostels in Can Tho: Casa Inn Hostel
What a beautiful place and your super easy answer on where to stay in Can Tho.
Go with the Casa Inn Hostel!
The super clean, and easy-going place is the best place in town. We like their fresh design. The dorm is super nice, the beds even have curtains AND they do have A/C. SCORE!!
The dorm is also just 7€ per night. If you want to “splurge”, the double room starts from 15€.
Ask them for their tours around the area, and cooking classes. Good fun!

Best Hostels in Rach Gia: Kiet Hong Hotel
For sure you want to add the Mekong Delta to your bucket-list Vietnam. Here in Rach Gia we recommend The Kiet Hong Hotel. It is NOT a hostel, but a cheap quality hotel. There is no hostel we could recommend actually.
Do not really expect anything social here. It is the best option though to stay here, and a double room is only 12€.

Best Hostels in Phu Quoc
Langchia Home in Phu Quoc is a serene and enchanting retreat nestled on the picturesque island of Phu Quoc, Vietnam. Surrounded by lush greenery and pristine beaches, Langchia Home offers a perfect blend of tranquility, comfort, and natural beauty.

Best Hostels in Vung Tau
Beach time at Vung Tau! Once a French colonial town, Vung Tau is a peninsula with many beaches to relax. It would be your first choice to go out of Ho Chi Minh to get to the beach.
We have found one cool hostel in Vung Tau:
- Tomorrow Hostel – more a homestay, perfect to unwind
The location is pretty much the same. The big difference is the style of accommodation, that’s it.
Tomorrow Hostel in Vung Tau
Tomorrow Hostel is for every age of traveler, NOT looking for party, but a very relaxing, easy stay with a good night sleep. Their dorms come in pod-style, which I really like. (only downside, the pods do not have curtains).
Tomorrow Hostel is to me a typical Vietnamese-type of hostel.
Meaning you have the Vietnamese hospitality and more of a home-stay feeling, rather than a hostel. There is not as much social ambiance with western-travelers and foreigners, but you chat more with the lovely Vietnamese owners.
A great choice for adults, older travelers and couples.

Best Hostels in Mui Ne
Mui Ne; get ready for kite-surfing, beaches, dunes (and corrupt police).
There is again two great hostels in Mui Ne we want to share:
- iHome Backpacker Resort – The iHome Original – fun hostel with private beach
- Mui Ne Hills Backpackers – backpacker’s choice with swimming pool
Good to know: The street leading out of Mui Ne is known for corrupt police. They stop every foreigner on a bike and you will need to bribe them. Please inform yourself on how to avoid this scam.
1. iHome Backpacker Resort – The iHome Original
Another fun, backpacker hostel, but with a PRIVATE beach and a swimming pool: iHome Backpacker Resort – The iHome Original.
This place is epic and well-known and is located literally on the beach. You can walk from your room into the ocean in 1 minute.
What can you expect:
- Private Beach
- Beach-Front Swimming Pool
- Unlimited beer for 1 hour
- Free Water Refill
- Beach Hammocks
- Indoor Games
- Awesome people
Below we add a video for you. It’ll give you a great impression of how your stay here will look like.

2. Mui Ne Hills Backpackers – Party Hostel
Especially designed for the backpacker, Mui Ne Hills has still all the luxury of a resort style accommodation…at backpacker prices.
This is the place to meet, have beers with your new travel mates, and seriously kick-back and have an epic time. Many kite-surfers love to stay here. And obviously, there are tours to the famous Dunes you should not miss.
Oh, and just so you know: There is not one swimming pool…but TWO swimming pools!

Best Hostels in Da Lat, Vietnam
As for Da Lat, we have three cool hostels for you. They are all quite different. Choose the one that fits best your travel style. There is not a party hostel around. For partying, better hop over to Mui Ne or Nha Trang. Da Lat is more about nature and coffee.
The best hostels in Da Lat are:

1. Tigon Dalat Hostel
Tigon is a great option for solo travellers that enjoy privacy-led dorms. The dorms here sleep 20 people so it’s super sociable!
One thing to note: there are no private rooms on offer here.
The balcony is certainly the best bit, with outstanding views of the surronding mountains.
Relax in the common area, play billiard and enjoy a free breakfast each morning. Every second night there is an affordable family dinner on offer, too.

2. Pretty Backpackers House
Here’s a wonderful hostel for backpackers in the area.
Pretty Backpackers House is situated nearby some great street food and the night market is a short stroll on foot.
Inside the hostel there is a friendly dog and a super cool rooftop which is perfect for enjoying dinner and a beer (or two).
Once again, there are only dorms here and no private rooms. Ask the staff about renting a motorbike and booking buses for travelling the country.

Best Hostels in Nha Trang
First things first: We are not a big fan of Nha Trang itself. The city itself is very touristy, but the surroundings and day trips are seriously amazing.
We do not think it is worth it to visit Nha Trang! Crowded, overpriced, touristy. There’s much better places to see!
For the best hostels in Nha Trang, we used to love staying at CCASA Hostel. But lately, this hostel hasn’t really been up to standards. But we still like its design aspect: sleeping in containers, cooking with design, and hanging out in giant hammocks under the stars; sound tempting?
Three Shipping containers in red, yellow, and blue are there to provide a good night’s sleep and an open space to socialize.
We also have a guide on the Best Hostels to stay in Nha Trang that you should check out for really great options.

Best Hostels in Kon Tum
Phuot Homestay
Our journey took us as well to Kon Tum. Not many travelers come here at all. You won’t find it on any itinerary for Vietnam. And yet, here it is.
It is really off the beaten path. Kon Tum has a super local vibe. It offers a bunch of great cafes, incredible food (even for vegetarians!), and even sights you do not expect, such as:
- The wooden church
- the city hall (photo below)
- the iron bridge
We made our way here thanks to Instagram. We found a few photos of the area and were hooked. We did not make any reservation beforehand, since it’s not busy at all.
If you fancy a nice homestay, go with Phuot Homestay.
It is one of the few places listed on Hostelworld and Booking.com. We just drove up to a cool-looking hotel and asked for the price and if we can see the room first. Done, we got a deal!

2. Under The Coconut Tree
Hoi An is gorgeous, seriously! It is surrounded by water and endless rice fields. The beaches are around 5km away from the Old Town.
And we have found the perfect place if beaches are more your cup of tea.
Under The Coconut Tree is a beautiful place we enjoyed. We did not stay here personally, but visited a friend who stayed here. We tried their burgers – yummy! The rooms are bamboo huts, absolutely beautiful!
You are a 50 meters walk away from the beach. You will find hammocks here and lovely street vendors offer you to kick-back in the hammocks in exchange for you buying a drink from them. Now, you would think the drinks are pricey, right!? (at least we thought so…)
He, the street vendor, only asked for 30.000 Dong for a fresh Coconut. What a fantastic deal!
So, yeah, you can also stay at the Under the Coconut tree and hop on a bicycle to visit the Ancient Town. That is our 5th recommendation for places to stay in Hoi An.

Best Hostels in Ha Long Bay City (actually Ha Long City):
Truth be told, for us Ha Long City is not a very nice city to stay in. It is overwhelming, loud, and a tiny Las Vegas with Casinos.

FAQ
Vietnam Itinerary
Here is our recommendation for a backpacker itinerary in Vietnam.
You see, Vietnam is perfect to travel from North to South and vice versa. You will either be starting in Hanoi in the North or in Saigon in the South.
Good to know: If I were you, I would have a look on the weather conditions – simply ask Google. It may make sense to start in the South, when the weather prediction for the North isn’t that good.
Above in the map you find our itinerary recommendation and all mentioned hostels.

Hostel Guide
We know the country and the hostels around. We have been traveling since 2007, staying in the coolest places around. Therefore, we decided to put together this list of great Vietnamese Hostels. And not just that. We also created a big guide to Hostels.
How long to visit Vietnam?
You can see all of Vietnam’s highlights in 20 days if you travel by (sleeping) bus or if you just decide to focus on one area – North and central Vietnam or South and Central Vietnam. However, we do recommend to spend more days in this beautiful country.
Do not rush it!
Vietnam has so many places to see and discover!
Did you know there is an actual desert in Vietnam? We are not talking about the Mui Né dunes, there is an actual hidden dessert.
Find all details on our most EPIC things to do in Vietnam article.
Visa to Vietnam
Need a visa to Vietnam?
Read our full review on iVisa, the shortcut for your visa around the world.
We got our visa with iVisa, it was super fast and cheap. Certainly much cheaper than other travellers we met. Unfortunately this German guy did not tell us his online company he got the visa from, but he paid 80€ while we paid 25€.
When is the best time to visit Vietnam?
That is a really good question! and the answer is…
Depending on which area you want to see. Rainy season in North Vietnam and South Vietnam are inverted.
Meaning, when it is rainy season in the north, you can visit the south with sunny warm weather (and no rain).
In central Vietnam, there is warm weather all year round, but it also has a rainy season. The rainy season in Da Nang is around November to January.
Trying to avoid rainy season is a good idea. We just caught the beginning of the rainy season in the south and we had rain all day. Nevertheless, rainy season does not mean that it rains all day long.
While we were in DaLat, it rained every day from 14:00 to 17:00. It was quite punctual every day and we planned our activities around it.
Transport in Vietnam
In Vietnam it is easy to move around. You will find buses, sleeping buses, trains, taxis, scooter-taxis and even drivers who will be happy to drive you around all day long.
Also, in many areas (like Cat Ba Island) it is a good idea to rent a motorbike.
That will give you more flexibility to visit the places.
From Hanoi to Sa Pa you can either take the sleeping train or the sleeping bus.
We took the sleeping train. You can purchase tickets online, BUT: They are 4 times more expensive compared to buying tickets directly at the main train station. No kidding!
Your Destination is not listed?
That simply means there is currently no hostel we recommend…However, we have a huge internal list with fantastic hostels all over the place.
If you are missing any destination, then drop us an email. We’d be happy to give you our recommendation for more hostels across Vietnam.
Hostel Packing List
Okay, after finding all these super cool places, it’s time to see what you should pack in your backpack or suitcase. Make sure you always pick a quality hostel, it totally reduces the things you need to pack.
Make sure you check as well the weather. Weather in Vietnam varies a lot. It can always happen you will be caught in the rain.
I remember the first time backpacking Vietnam. I thought “if it rains, I simply won’t leave the hostel”…I was very naive, let me tell you that. In Da Lat it was raining every day, like clock-work, starting by noon. Sometimes, you simply cannot avoid the rain.
Therefore, what to pack for Vietnam? Get ready for sunshine and rain; for hot and a bit of cold.
Here is our ultimate hostel packing list. It features 23 items you need to pack.

CLOSED HOSTELS:
9 Station Hostel
All right you will LOVE this one: 9 Station is the super cool luxury hostel in Phu Quoc. An absolutely amazing place to stay for all types of travelers. There is a social atmosphere, perfect for solo-travelers too.
Make sure you join their boat tours and snorkeling trips. Absolutely worth it. They even have a swimming pool, although we actually never used it, since you have the beach right around the corner.
NEW: 3 best hostels in Phu Quoc + top things to do
Komori House & Foods
There is a new, cute hostel in town, called Komori House & Foods.
It is more of a homestay, offering dorms to sleep in too.
Truth be told: We did not stay here personally. It is a brand new homestay/ hostel. However, it looks so promising. Knowing Da Lat, this could be a very unique accommodation! (Da Lat is quite Artsy and Hipsterish!)
Goc Phu Yen Backpacker & Photographer
This accommodation was totally unexpected, to be honest. Tuy Hoa is not exactly famous, yet a great experience to backpack Vietnam off the beaten path. It is really a destination for everyone traveling by motorbike through Vietnam.
The Goc Phu Yen Backpacker & Photographer is a cute, little hostel/ homestay/ cafe with a big heart.
Again, this place is actually more of a homestay with dorms. We guess, the dorms is why they call it a hostel.
You are just 10 minutes away from the beach and ocean. There are also restaurants and cafés around. As always, we recommend renting a scooter to explore the area.
John and Paul Inn Hostel
From a more homestay-style hostel to a real backpacker hostel.
John and Paul Inn is an absolute backpacker party hostel at the beach. YUP!
In their own words: Ready to Rock ’n’ Roll? Looking for the cheapest drinks in town? Want to meet other backpackers at nightly activities? If so, you’ve found your answer.
You are just a 3 minute walk from the beach and can stay in a clean, fun hostel. Bare in mind, this is a really one of the most popular party hostels in Vietnam. Book in advance, it gets sold out easily.
Super cool: They also organize tours like sand-surfing the dunes, visiting water falls, boat tours and such. FUN!
4. Cute Home stay in the rice paddies – for couples (CLOSED)
Besides staying in the Ancient Town or at the beach directly (see #5 below), you can also go with a cute homestay in the rice paddies.
On Booking.com alone you find more than 200 homestays in Hoi An, rated with 9.0 or higher. You see, there is a wide selection.
We stayed at The Bau Bi Retreat. You have wonderful views over rice paddies, a swimming pool, and even an airport shuttle if needed.
The double room was around 25€, but prices always depend on dates.
Everhome Hostel, Hue
Our number 1 hostel for Hue is a home-from-home that welcomes a variety of traveller types.
The room choices are fabulous,: male and female-only dorms, family rooms and a double private.
Not only is the breakfast free, but it includes a yummy banana pancake you just have to try!
The staff here are super friendly and at hand 24/7.
Hang out in the shared lounge and enjoy some ‘you time’ behind your very own privacy curtain.
Bonjour Hostel, Hue
Top location, with a nightlife and bars nearby, yet in a quiet street.
The staff really stands out, they know what they are doing. They help you with your bike ride or train to Da Nang or up North, and know Hue like the back of their hand.
The design? Well, nothing special really. Do not expect any gorgeous rooms or dorms. They are simple, clean, efficient.
For us, Bonjour Hostel is the absolute best place to stay in Hue on a budget.
SMLXL, Hue
When you are traveling as a couple, with a group of friends, or as a coffee-lover, check out SMLXL.
We LOVE this place.
It is not really a hostel since there is only 3 rooms (1 private double room and two dorms). They do not have a lot of guests here, so do not expect any social vibes, except chatting with the wonderful staff here.
This accommodation is inside a super cute café. It feels more like a boutique hotel, to be honest. The breakfast is included and extremely yummy; one of the best we had in all Vietnam. Obviously, you can get a coffee with your breakfast. The coffee…WOW!!
This place is the super-cool type of hipster.
Easy Tiger Hostel
Update: Super sad, but Easy Tiger closed its door permanently. Fingers crossed they will open again one day.
The absolute coolest hostels in Phong Nha, The Easy Tiger Hostel.
Enjoy a swimming pool, a huge common area, and even daily briefings on the best things to do in Phong Nha.
No kidding. Every morning you can get in the common area and the staff has quick sharing on the best things to do on that day. This can be anything from the cave trips, rice field trips, to even orgnanised clean-ups.
This is an awesome backpacker choice. One of the most famous backpacker hostels in Vietnam.
ENJOY!
May Hostel
Hai Phong is pure madness when you are unlucky enough to hit the rush-hour….like we did!
Anyway, Hai Phong is your place to be to take the ferry to Cat Ba Island. You can also put your motorbike on the ferry here.
We stayed at May Hostel. It was a total surprise to see such a nice and beautiful hostel in that city. We only expected a regular backpacker place or homestay, and that is it.
Decorated with tons of colorful tiles like Memory Hostel in Da Nang, May Hostel even has a roof top terrace and such.
Fantastic place to stay! The hostel is located a 5 minutes ride to the ferry terminal. Ask the team for a grab.
Gecko Hostel in Vung Tau
For partying, go with Gecko Hostel.
It is the best backpacker choice. The rooms are simple and clean. They do organize BBQs, even beer pong and some beach activities.
Cozy Nook Hostel
Easily the best hostel in Dalat is Cozy Nook Hostel – a real home away from home.
It’s family run, with an emphasis on bringing travellers together with a nightly family dinner for all.
The showers are hot, breakfast is free and there’s plenty of opportunity to enroll on some outdoor activities including canyoning and motorbike tours.
Mai Chau Hostel Lounge
In case you make it out here to Mai Chau, there’s not really a lot of hostel options. The coolest place is the Mai Chau Hostel. Simple, effective, clean, cheap. It is also a bar and restaurant.
What else do you need? We do like their double-mattresses in the huts.
