Cocoon City Hostel in Review
Letâs have a look around and properly appreciate their philosophy of hospitality. Cocoon City Hostel is a 5 star hostel in Chania, Crete becauseâŠ
1. Up-cycled Eco-friendly Materials
When you first glance at Cocoon City Hostel, youâll notice the modern, minimalist design.
But that in no way means drab, boring spaces that cause constant yawning. Oh no!
The beds should certainly catch your eye – they have been custom made with serious comfort in mind. Instead of cheap bunkbeds from Ikea that rattle, youâll have your very own sturdy space.
Many of the materials, including those to make the beds, are eco-friendly and built to last. This means less waste in the long run.
In the social spaces most of the furnishings are made from wood. And because the rooms are kept minimalistic, youâll find no unnecessary waste on pointless plastic âspace fillersâ.
As for supporting a sustainable local economy? All of the staff are locals themselves.
Good work, Cocoon team.
2. Vivid Colours and Shapes
Now for the design, possibly the best part about Cocoon City Hostel!
Vivid colours and shapes adorn the hostel walls to add a bit of warmth and spice to the otherwise modern tone.
According to the interior designer,
âThe bright colours symbolise and encourage the coexistence of people from various backgrounds, in the same area.â
So yes, you can expect to meet people from all walks of life here as everyone is welcome!
The dorms are kept small, with just 4-6 beds. We think this is the reason they havenât included privacy curtains. In a smaller room itâs likely everyone will get talking and show a high level of respect.

Anyway, each bed has an individual light and socket. The under-bed storage is well thought out and spacious.
Close friends and couples also have a double and twin room option. These come with a private bathroom for that added bit of luxury. Oh and a smart TV!
3. Unique use of group chat
There might not be organised activities or social events, but Cocoon has something else up its sleeve.
A group chat for all staying guests!
Once youâve been welcomed in and sussed the place out, the unique group chat is the next step if you want to meet other travellers.
Itâs a brilliant idea, especially for solo travellers.

Send out a message asking whatâs happening that day, or create an idea and spread the love.
Tip: if you fancy a night on the town, use the group chat to find buddies. Thereâs no curfew so you can take advantage of the great nearby nightlife.
4. One social space fits all
The building has been divided into zones that offer spaces to relax, cook, sit and chat. Yet these zones make up part of one large room.
Other than your comfy bed, the large coffee bar and lounge is the ideal space to do all of the things listed above.
Because it is the only common area in the place, it encourages people to come together and socialise. And in fact it is made easier because of this.
To support different traveller types, little details have been added to make everyone comfortable in the space.
Switch on the TV, grab a book, daydream out the window as you sip your coffee, or challenge someone to a game of chess.

Having said that, the dorms do also have their own balcony with super cool hanging chairs. So you donât necessarily need to leave your room to meet people.
Even the fully-fitted kitchen has a few seats so that conversation can continue over a hot stove.
5. Local staff that care
As we already mentioned, this is a family run hostel and all of the staff are local.
Itâs always great to see staff mentioned in consistently high feedback. Use of the words âamazingâ, âhelpfulâ and âsparkling cleanâ show that they not only make impressive effort with people, but with the hostel condition too.
Because the care of travellers and the hostel go hand in hand!
Test their local knowledge and donât be afraid to ask anything.
If you fancy a yummy breakfast for an extra 5 EUR, just let them know.
Theyâre at hand from 11am to 7pm, so make sure you let them know beforehand if youâre going to be arriving outside of these hours.
