The Sprindrift Hostel opened its doors in late 2018 – it’s the new kid on the block!
Ran by a young couple with a lust for travel, you’ll be sure to feel at home here pretty quickly.
Update: Spindrift opened a new hostel in Madiha, near Matara, named Spindrift Madiha. It is one of the absolute best hostels in Sri Lanka.
Did you know that spindrift stands for
“Spray blown from the crests of waves by the wind.”
We think you’ll be in agreement that this is a nifty hostel name, and certainly apt for its location near the beach.

Psst! It’s no wonder Spindrift is listed as one of 15 most luxurious hostels in the world.
We are Hostelgeeks. We collect the most amazing Hostels around the world: the 5 Star Hostels. Our awarded hostels tick all the boxes of our transparent rating criteria. No doubt you’re eager to have a look around and get to know the place.
Kick off your shoes and come with us. The Spindrift Hostel in Weligama, Sri Lanka is a 5 Star Hostel because…
1. It’s all in the detail
When it comes to sustainability efforts, it’s always better when they are a little more obvious. At Spindrift, all you have to do is look at the details.
Luckily for you, most of the social hang out spaces are outside.
So not only do you get to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine, but you’ll also help save on energy.
Talking about social spaces; did you notice the fun use of old pallets around the place? We spotted a pallet coffee table on the rooftop and an entire (seriously comfy) double bed raised off the floor thanks to a collection of stacked pallets.
Keep looking, and you’ll notice bamboo and wicker amongst the minimalist design. That’s clever, sustainable design we love.
2. Designed for Backpackers
…by backpackers!
This modern, clean and super spacious hostel is perfect for hanging out with new friends from around the world.
Multiple areas offer everyone a chance to unwind in their own way.
All you have to do is choose where you’d like to make yourself comfy…
- In the sofa/TV area
- On one of the numerous balconies
- At the retro gaming area
- Snuggled in a hanging chair
The Spindrift Hostel also offers the choice of spacious doubles and sleek dorm rooms. Each room comes with a hot ensuite shower, too. As the dorms have only 4-6 beds, you won’t be wasting time queuing for the bathroom.
Whitewashed walls and big windows create a fresh environment that help avoid that cloggy head feeling of being indoors.
Working on the road? Make use of the great laptop-dedicated space.
3. Been there, got the T-shirt
Hands up if you’re a sucker for a souvenir! How about strutting around Weligama representing The Spindrift in a well-designed t-shirt of theirs?
The little hostel shop offers both male and female fitted t-shirts with the hostel logo printed in different sizes.
We reckon the white version will show off your new tan the best.
4. Socialise in the Sunshine
To kick-start that social energy in you, Spindrift kindly offer a free breakfast and copious amounts of tea and coffee.
Once you’re fuelled with caffeine, get ready for the daily activities.
The owners really care that you have a good time!
From surf lessons to dinner nights; there is always something to get involved in.
Also, don’t forget that the beach is just minutes away – invite new friends and simply chill in the sunshine and cool off in the waves.
5. Staff = Owners
That’s right; the owners of The Sprindrift Hostel are the main faces you’ll see.
Josh and Charlotte are a young travelling duo that made their wish come true by opening this hostel.
They also have a great team of local staff helping them out. No query is too much trouble for these guys. So don’t be shy!
